Descriptive Text

1.     The social function of descriptive texts is to describe a particular thing, person, animal, place and or event to the readers of hearers (Gerot & Wignel, 1994; Knapp & Watkins, 2005). The process of describing is done through ordering their characteristics clearly, starting from naming them, classifying them, and dealing with their attributes, behaviors, functions, and so on.

2.     The structure of the expressions is as follows:

a.       Identification or general statement 

Ø  This part is aimed at introducing and identifying specific participants such as a person, a thing, place, animal, and event.

b.       Description 

Ø  This part is structured to describe that participant from its characteristics, appearances, personality, and habits or qualities.

3.     The language features of offering help are as follows:

a.      The use of present tense

b.     The use of linking verb (is, are, has, have, belongs to)

c.      The use of adjectives and adverbs

d.  The use adverbial phrases to add more information about manner, place,, or time Learning activities
